1. The Sesquicentennial Songwriting Competition is open to members of Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity. In order to enter the competition, entrants must submit the submission form and upload their original work to kappaturns150.org/song-contest. The winning song will be judged and debut at the 73rd Biennial Convention in June 2020. The winning song will become the property of Kappa Kappa Gamma to distribute, publish and perform with credit given to the songwriter.

    1. The author or team composing/writing the music and lyrics and submitting the song must be member(s) of Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity.

    2. Entrants must be at least 18 years of age to participate.

    3. Kappa employees/family members are ineligible to participate.

    4. No purchase necessary. A purchase will not increase an entrant’s odds of winning.

    5. Void where prohibited.

  2. Competition rules are as follows:

    1. All material must be original words and music and representative of Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity.

    2. The deadline for submission is Nov. 30, 2019, per the instructions listed at kappaturns150.org.

    3. In order to enter the competition, entrants must submit the submission form and upload their original work to kappaturns150.org/song-contest.

    4. An impartial panel of judges will score the competition using the below criteria. This criteria will assist the panel of judges in determining the winning song.

      1. Song structure and composition

        1. The song has a clear theme or cohesive idea.

        2. The song has clearly identifiable sections of one to three verses.

      2. Lyrics

        1. The lyrics evoke an emotional response from the listener.

        2. The lyrics are singable and memorable.

        3. The lyrics have an identifiable rhyme scheme or pattern.

      3. Music and melody

        1. The music and melody add to the emotional impact of the song.

        2. The music keeps the listener interested and engaged.

        3. The music and lyrics fit together in a cohesive way.

      4. Originality

        1. The song expresses the theme in a new or fresh way.

        2. The song is memorable.

  3. The winning song and its writer(s)/composer(s) will be announced March 9, 2020.

    1. The winning writer(s)/composer(s) will be notified via email prior to the public announcement.

  4. Prize: The winning song will be announced and performed at the 73rd Biennial Convention in June 2020. The winning song will become the property of Kappa Kappa Gamma to distribute, publish and perform with credit given to the songwriter. The winning song and entrant will be recorded in the Kappa Kappa Gamma archives. The winner will receive no compensation, just credit as the author/composer. The prize value is $0.

    1. The winner need not attend Convention.

  5. Intellectual property, right to publicity, legal liability and indemnification regarding the competition is as follows:

    1. Must be the original work of the entrant.

    2. Must not have been submitted previously in a promotion of any kind or exhibited or distributed previously in any media.

    3. Must not contain material that violates or infringes another's rights, including but not limited to privacy, publicity, intellectual property rights, copyright infringement, or legal or moral rights of any living or deceased third party (e.g., names, logos, symbols, slogans, photographs that belong to others, photographs of other people, quotes from other people, and parodies of other people).

    4. Must not disparage Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity or any other third party (e.g., any person, product, location, retailer, company or brand).

    5. Must not in any way contain any names, logos, symbols, slogans, parodies or trademarks of any retailer other than those of Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity.

    6. Must not include personally identifiable information.

    7. Must not contain material that is inappropriate, indecent, lewd, pornographic, obscene, hateful, tortious, defamatory, slanderous, or libelous. Must not feature gratuitous violence, dangerous stunts, real weapons of any kind, or drug use.

    8. Must not contain material that promotes bigotry, racism, hatred or harm against any group or individual, or discrimination based on race, gender, religion, nationality, disability, sexual orientation or age.

    9. Must not contain material that is unlawful, in violation of, or contrary to any laws or regulations.

    10. Must have been legally created (i.e., the creation of the song does not violate any laws or regulations).

    11. Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity may disqualify any entry for any reason, including if it determines that the entry fails to conform to these terms and conditions in any way or otherwise contains unacceptable content. Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity is under no obligation to disclose why an entry has been disqualified.

    12. By submitting an entry, each entrant agrees Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity shall have a perpetual, irrevocable, assignable, royalty-free, fully paid-up license to exploit, edit, modify, post, disseminate, create derivative works of, distribute and otherwise use the entry and all elements of such entry, including, without limitation, the names and likenesses of any persons or locations embodied therein in any and all media now known or hereafter devised (including, without limitation, on the Kappa Kappa Gamma website and social media accounts) in perpetuity without compensation or notification to or permission from entrant or any third party.

    13. You agree for yourself and your heirs, executors, and administrators: (a) to release and hold harmless the promotion entities and the respective officers, directors, employees, agents, representatives, successors and assigns (collectively, the “Released Parties”) from any liability, illness, injury, death, loss, litigation or damage that may occur, directly or indirectly, whether caused by negligence or not, from your participation in the promotion and/or your acceptance, possession, use or misuse of any prize or any portion thereof, including any travel related thereto; (b) to indemnify the Released Parties from any and all liability resulting or arising from the promotion and to hereby acknowledge that the Released Parties have neither made nor are in any manner responsible or liable for any warranty, representation or guarantee, expressed or implied, in fact or in law, relative to a prize, including express warranties provided exclusively by a prize supplier that are sent along with a prize; (c) if selected as a winner, to the use by the Released Parties of your name, username/online alias, voice, photograph, image and/or likeness for publicity, promotional and advertising purposes in any and all media now or hereafter known throughout the world in perpetuity without additional compensation, notification, permission or approval, and upon request to the giving of consent in writing to such use; and (d) to be bound by these terms and conditions, to waive any right to claim any ambiguity or error therein or in the promotion itself, and to be bound by all decisions of Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity, which are binding and final. Failure to comply with these conditions may result in disqualification from the promotion at Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity’s sole discretion.
