Beta

St. Mary's School

1871–74

Historical facts:

  1. Alpha Chapter deputized Minnie Stewart and Lou Bennett to go to Knoxville, Illinois, to organize a chapter at St. Mary's School.

  2. The charter members were the only members Beta Chapter ever had.

  3. The two charter members of Beta Chapter were sisters Mary and Alice Winter.

Fun facts:

  1. At the time of the publication of the 1898 Catalogue, there was some confusion, and Knox College, home of Eta Kappa Chapter, was listed as the site of Beta Chapter.

  2. At a time when new chapters were given the names of "deceased chapters," the name Beta was also given to the chapter at St. Lawrence University. That policy was changed by a decision of the 1890 Convention. Beta Chapter at St. Lawrence was renamed Beta Beta — the Beta prefix indicated that it was the second time the chapter letter Beta had been assigned.

  3. Alice Pillsbury, Monmouth, tried to restart Beta Chapter in spring 875 but she "didn't like the material and gave it up."
